Characteristics of a bad manager

Lets take a look at some of the things that we, as information professionals, should not practice in a managerial or leadership position.
(This list is the product of brainstorming sessions held among the students of this course)

Impact on staff/work environment

- Takes things/issues personally

- Gives more preference to certain individuals or groups

- Has no charisma

- Lack of communication skills

- Lacking manners, uses foul language and loud tone, disrespectful.

- Not trustworthy, spreads gossips, tells lies

- Personal problems spill into work place

- Impulsive decision making

- Not consulting with anyone, close minded

- Lack of humor

- Aloof, not very approachable.

- Not loyal to the organization

- Not very creative or innovative.

- Susceptible and easily influenced

- Does not know how to delegate work (micro-manager)

- Poor decision maker, Bad planner, individual decision making

- Thinks he/she is very smart

- Imposes his/her own will

- Lacks team-working skills, bad time manager, disorganized and has no priorities.

- Work delegation according to personal likes/dislikes.

- Not flexible about employee work hours

- Not professionally trained in that area.

- Does not support innovation

- Does not support employee learning

- Does not take safety and well being of employees seriously.

- Does not give credit for good ideas and work done by employees.

- Does not pay on time or the cheques bounce

- Division into preferred and not-so-preferred groups

- Emotional and physical health affected.

- Creates tensions between employees and between employees and management

- Higher absenteeism

- Generates gossips and rumors among employees
